Victoria Day weekend is upon us, which signifies that this hot weather is finally here to stay. Thankfully, this means we can start spending less time cooped up inside and more enjoying our outdoor patios, firepits, or planning to increase the curb appeal of our home for an upcoming sale.
It’s definitely a seller’s market out there, but it doesn’t mean you can’t still increase the number of offers you receive or even the amount offered with a little TLC to the front of your property.
Here are a few tips that can easily be done in the span of a weekend to up the curb appeal of your home.
- Take down the Christmas lights and decorations that are still up. Just because they’re not on, doesn’t mean drivers don’t notice or comment on it. You may not care about what those driving by think, but you should if they may potentially buy your home.
- Repaint any worn spots in your fence or other easy to see areas. It’s amazing what a coat of paint can do to really catch the eye, especially if you go from plain white to something more trendy. While you’re at it, repaint the front or garage door if it’s chipped or faded. You’ll thank us.
- Add a couple of planters or other pieces to spruce up your front porch and make it more welcoming.
- Weed your garden and get your soil ready for planting, even if you’ll be gone before having time to grow anything. Potential buyers may see the ready garden and see it as an incentive to buy because they won’t need to put in as much work for the season.
- If you don’t have a flower garden or perennials in your front yard, plant a few that are already growing (you can find lots at local nurseries and garden centres). For a small cost, you can really boost the friendliness and appeal with just a few plants and flowers.
- Keep your grass and the rest of your landscaping, clean, cut, and trimmed. Don’t get lazy in these steps, especially if you’re planning on selling. If you see any bald spots in the lawn, add seed or sod now.
- Reseal your driveway and fill any holes or cracks. Pressure washing (you can rent one for a small fee) is great for getting dirt and grime from walkways and decks as well to get them looking like new again.
- Add something creative or bold that really catches the eye. You want your home to stand out, so don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour here or an eye-catching statement piece there.
- If your budget allows, replace hardware such as your mailbox and light fixtures to make them more modern and less rusty. And make sure to dust those cobwebs! Other items like a new doorbell, shutters on the windows, and gutters (which it is time to clean, by the way) can instantly increase the appeal of your home.
